Safety First Consulting is a TSSA approved training provider for Propane Heaters and Torches in Construction CH-2.
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to recognize and evaluate the hazards of propane, and demonstrate how to safely connect, disconnect and activate propane torches, heaters up to 400,000 BTU/H in accordance with Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) requirements.
The training card has a 3 year expiry.
The course is broken up into 5 modules. Upon completion of all modules participants will be required to successfully complete both a practical and a written examination.
1. Module 1
a. Identify the properties of propane as a vapour and as a liquid as well as the hazards associated with the fuel.
2. Module 2
a. Identify the applicable sections of the TSS act.
b. Identify the applicable requirements of Ontario regulation 215/01. (fuel industry certificates)
c. Identify the applicable requirements of Ontario Regulation 212/01. (gaseous fuels)
d. Identify the applicable requirements of Ontario Regulation 211/01. (propane storage and handling)
3. Module 3
a. Identify various types of cylinders, their components, markings etc.
b. Identify the requirements for safe handling of propane cylinders
c. Identify the B149.2 code items for the storage of cylinders
4. Module 4
a. Demonstrate procedures for connecting cylinders and appliances

5. Module 5
a. Identify and select appropriate construction heater.
b. Identify the relevant sections of the B149.1 natural gas and propane installation code as they pertain to propane fired construction heaters under 400,000 BTU
c. Identify and select appropriate propane fired torches.
d. Light construction heaters and safely operate according to manufacturer’s instructions.
e. Safely light and operate construction torch according to manufacturer’s instructions
