In my session, I will be facilitating a discussion about cultural appropriation through the lens of a Frankie Welch scarf from the 1960s. The session is modeled after a March 2022 tour at UGA Special Collections for Athens Clarke County 8th Graders and follows the structure of the tour. After providing participants with information about Frankie Welch, I will utilize one of her most famous designs to encourage a thoughtful dialogue about the complicated nature of cultural appropriation in fashion and history. Participants should leave the session with a deeper sense of how to open dialogue with younger students about issues with complicated and uncertain answers.
