Founded by composer Sheng Lei and playwright Meng-Huan Lin in 2022, Storytellers Musical Lab (SML) focuses on the development of new Taiwanese musicals. Dedicated to storytelling and experimenting, SML hopes to explore more possibilities for musical theatre with innovative ways of collaboration.
Tropical Angels follows a genuine connection between a surviving soldier in the Pacific War and a comfort woman in 1940 Southeast Asia. During the Pacific War, Lin, a Taiwanese Imperial soldier was sent to the southeastern tip of Asia. There he meets Salin, a comfort woman who happened to speak the same language as him. With the score of folk, rock, and Taiwanese/Japanese-inspired music, the audience follow Lin on his journey in search for redemption and identity.

About Taiwan Cultural Center in New YorkÃÂ
The Taipei Cultural Center in New York (TCC), which was established as the first overseas office of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture in 1991, builds connections through arts and culture in New York and throughout North America. Each year, we reach out to art museums, theaters, performing arts centers, film cinemas, festivals, curators, and presenters in the US and Canada. We support international cultural exchanges, collaborations, and artistic events in order to introduce Taiwan's arts and culture to a broader audience.
